Boating Accident Attorney

Two Boston men were indicted on charges relating to a boating accident that happened on May 30th in which a young women’s arm was severed off.

Suffolk County prosecutors states that Benjamin P. Urbelis, 33, of Charlestown an attorney, was indicted on charges of negligent operation of a boat, operating a boat under the influence of alcohol and supplying alcohol to a minor. Alexander Williams, 24, of the West End was indicted on charges of negligent operation of a boat, supplying alcohol to a minor, and tampering with evidence according to the office of Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F Conley.

The incident took place on the evening of Wednesday May 30th, the 19 year- old Auburn Woman’s arm was severed by the propeller of the 30-foot boat owned by Urbelis.

Prosecutors initially charged only Urbelis but later charged Williams. Prosecutors stated that they have gathered additional evidence suggesting that Williams was operating the boat at the time of the woman’s injury.   

Every year the U.S. Coast Guard releases the Recreational Boating Statistics Report. For the year of 2014 the total number of deaths was estimated at 610, which was the second lowest number of fatalities on record, but an increase from the previous year of 560. Injuries due to boating accidents also increased 2.2 percent to 2,678 and the total number of accidents as a whole was recorded at 4,064, a slight increase of .5 percent.

The report states that alcohol use was the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents and the leading factor in 21 percent of deaths. The top five primary contributing factors in accidents were operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed and alcohol use.
